Hanthawaddy Airport is the name of Yangon’s new international airport which is currently still under construction.

Hanthawaddy Airport
Originally due to open in 2014, the completion of Hanthawaddy Airport has been hampered by funding and contract issues and the COVID-19 global pandemic. The current opening date is scheduled to be 2022.
Hanthawaddy Airport lies to the X of Yangon city itself, some 48 miles (77 km) from downtown Yangon. Once it opens, it will become Myanmar’s main airport and take over from the existing Yangon International Airport – also known as Mingaladon Airport – as the primary airport serving Yangon.

Hanthawaddy Airport
Hanthawaddy Airport will have an ultimate capacity of 30 million passengers a year, compared to the 10 million capacity of the existing Yangon International Airport. When Hanthawaddy Airport first opens, it’s projected to have an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per year.
There are plans currently under negotiation to connect Hanthawaddy Airport to downtown Yangon and the existing Yangon Airport by express railway and expressway.
The city nearest to the new airport location is Bago.
Hanthawaddy Airport’s current projected cost is $US 1.5 billion to $2 billion.
