Useful Money Tips For Your Trip To Myanmar:
- Myanmar’s currency is the Burmese kyat. You can often use US Dollars in bigger cities and more touristy areas. In fact, some services aimed specifically at travellers will often advertise in Dollars, though the kyat will be accepted here too. It’s a good idea to carry some quantity of both local and US currencies. Make sure your Dollars are in good condition and look new, otherwise they may not be accepted. Also, bring smaller denominations with you.
- It’s wise to bring enough Dollars into Myanmar to cover your entire stay, then exchange into local currency as you need to. This is in case you arrive and find you cannot use your card in a local ATM.
- Though my may be able to get some kyat before departure, you’ll find it much easier to wait until you arrive in Myanmar to exchange currencies. You will also get a better rate. Unusually the airport rates can be very competitive but double check what you’re being offered using our currency converter above. If you don’t change your money at the airport, make sure you use a bank.
- ATMs are available in the bigger towns and cities in Myanmar and most accept foreign credit and debit cards that are part of the major networks – Visa, MasterCard and so on. Having said that, some travellers find that their cards are rejected. See advice above on bringing currency into the country.
- When you withdraw money from an ATM using a foreign card in Myanmar, you will be charged at least 5,000 kyat for using the ATM, on top of your own bank’s currency exchange fees.
- It makes sense to take out one large sum of money. The daily maximum withdrawal limit is 300,000 Burmese kyat.
- Credit cards are still not widely accepted in Myanmar, even in some of the biggest hotels, and you can usually expect a surcharge of 3%-8%. By all means carry some plastic in case you can use it but always be prepared to pay with cash.
